Quartz had a cool data visualization last month showing how many recessions individual states have experienced since 2007. The story notes that “regional economies have been varying widely.” Further, “Considering local recessions is increasingly important, as people have become more rooted in their communities.”

Two states (Alaska and New Mexico—both resource extraction states) have had eight recessions since 2007. Five states had six recessions, three had five recessions, eight had four recessions, 11 had three recessions, 10 had two recessions, and 11 had one recession. (A recession is defined as “two consecutive quarters of inflation-adjusted negative growth.”)

Washington stands out positively: it is one of the states that experienced just one recession. Below is the chart for Washington and a few of our neighbors—for the rest, click through to the Quartz piece. The charts show quarterly GDP growth by state. (The pink bars represent state-wide recessions, and the diagonal lines represent the national recession.)

Meanwhile, as Opportunity Washington noted yesterday, members of the National Association of Business Economists are still pessimistic about the national economic outlook.
