Yesterday the Port of Seattle released an economic impact study of its seaport (marine cargo, fishing, cruises, and marinas), airport, and real estate activity. (An economic impact study released last month looked at marine cargo at the Ports of Seattle and Tacoma.)
Below is a summary chart of the impacts. Sea-Tac accounts for 80 percent of total jobs (direct, indirect and induced) generated by Port activity and 63 percent of state and local taxes. Altogether, seaport jobs totaled 43,457 and state and local taxes totaled $322 million.
Interestingly, airport activity includes activity by visitors to the Seattle area who arrived via Sea-Tac. If you only include on-site airport activity, the total jobs generated by the airport are 32,791 and state and local taxes are $200 million.
The report also surveyed Sea-Tac passengers and found that of 17.4 million passengers, 9.0 million are visitors to the area (as opposed to residents and those taking connecting flights). Of the 9.0 million, 60 percent are domestic visitors here for pleasure. The visitors spent $8.4 billion here, including $3.0 billion in restaurants and $1.3 billion in retail.
