Budget Reduction Ideas Galore

The House Democrats have joined Republicans in offering budget reduction options.  For your spreadsheeting pleasure, I have put their full list of reduction ideas into an Excel document, which you can access here:

HDC reduction list

I am still going through the list, but I already have questions.  The full list compares the reductions to the Governor’s 6.3% cuts, but they do not appear to be the same reduction options that the Governor released in November.  For example, the Democrats would reduce WSU’s funding by $7.5 million, and they say that the Governor would reduce their funding by $11 million.  But the Governor’s list says she would reduce WSU funding by $7.5 million.

Also, the Democrats’ list appears to say that they would not close Larch, but the Governor would, and that they would close McNeil Island, but the Governor wouldn’t.  But the Governor’s list says she would close McNeil Island and says nothing about Larch.

In short, this is not at all clear to me yet. Other items of note so far: it looks like the Democrats would not cut levy equalization, and they would reduce Medical Assistance by much less than the Governor.

Stay tuned — next week I hope to have a comparison of the Democrats’ reduction ideas to the Republicans’, and to the Governor’s.
