Budget negotiations must include Senate Rs, centrists

That’s the thrust of my column this morning.

While Democrats may want to ignore the Friday vote, the bipartisan coalition that passed the Senate budget must be included in the final resolution.

For those of us for whom sustainability is a top priority, the Senate budget sets the state on the right path.

…Reconciling the conflicting dollar figures poses no insurmountable problem. That’s normal budget math. But the reforms and commitment to sustainability that inspired last Friday’s insurrection must not be sacrificed in legislative compromise. We can no longer defer the reckoning.

As Kriss’s post below points out, the sustainability differences are sizeable. With considerable risk associated with the revenue forecast and unemployment still high, lawmakers must use this budget to change the trajectory of state spending.
