Here’s an interesting fact we missed last month: In 2014 Washington state’s organic farms ranked second in the nation for total sales of organic products.
At $515 million in total sales, we were behind only California which clocked an impressive $2.2 billion. The total amount is the value of crop production sales plus the value of livestock and poultry product sales.
The numbers come from the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) 2014 Organic Survey.
Other facts from the survey:
- Washington also ranks second, behind California, in organic crop sales ($387 million).
- Washington accounts for 12% of total U.S. organic crop sales.
- Washington ranks fourth for number of organic farms (716).
- Washington doesn’t rank in the top five for organic land acres or organic livestock and poultry product sales.
