The state Employment Security Department issued its employment report for October this morning. The preliminary estimate is that seasonally adjusted employment in Washington increased by 5,600 from September to October. The estimate of August to September job growth was revised to a gain of 1,600, from the preliminary loss of 600 jobs announced in last month’s report.
As I have noted frequently on this blog, initial estimates of job gains or losses are sometimes subject to large revisions when more complete information is available from unemployment insurance tax returns. (See this post.) This month’s report includes such revisions based on unemployment insurance tax returns for April, May and June. Based on these returns, 5,400 jobs have been added to the estimate of June employment. Here is a chart comparing the old and new estimates of Washington employment:
The preliminary estimate of October’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate for the state is 6.0 percent. The estimate of September’s unemployment rate is unchanged from the initial figure of 5.7 percent.
