July employment report shows the state added 5,900 jobs from June to July

The state Employment Security Department issued its employment report for July this morning. The preliminary estimate is that seasonally adjusted employment in Washington increased by 5,900 from May to June. The estimate of May to June job growth was revised up to a gain of 7,700 jobs from the gain of  3,900 jobs previously announced.

The preliminary estimate of June’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate for the state is 5.3 percent. The estimate of June’s unemployment rate is unchanged at 5.3 percent.

As I have noted frequently on this blog, initial estimates of job gains or losses are sometimes subject to large revisions when more complete information is available from unemployment insurance tax returns. (See this post.) This month’s report includes such revisions based on unemployment insurance tax returns for October, November and December 2014. Based on these returns, 15,500 jobs have been subtracted from last month’s estimate of December employment. Here is a chart comparing the old and new estimates of Washington employment:
