60 Minutes on I-1098

Just in time for the election, yesterday 60 Minutes ran a segment on taxing the rich and Initiative 1098.  The Seattle Times’ Politics Northwest blog called it “a general overview of the campaign here, in the context of the national debate over increasing taxes on the rich.” (And they provide a link to the video.)

I don’t think I would characterize it as a “general overview”.  It was more pro-1098 than anything, right down to Lesley Stahl’s incredulity that anyone could be opposed to the income tax.  We have gone over some reasons for opposition: the Legislature would be able to extend the income tax to all Washingtonians after two years with only a simple majority, the tax would be a highly volatile revenue source, and having an income tax would mean we would lose a major competitive advantage.
