Initial claims by sector

Here are two charts presenting initial claims for unemployment insurance by sector in Washington state for the four-week period from June 7 to July 4.

The first chart shows the number of claims by sector.

The five sectors with the greatest number of claims are, in descending order, health services and social assistance; accommodation and food services; manufacturing; retail trade; and construction. Together these five sectors accounted for sixty percent of the initial claims.

The second chart shows June 7 to July 4 initial claims as proportions of sector employment in the month of May.

The total number of private sector claims is equal to 3.1 percent of private sector May employment. The arts, entertainment and recreation sector experienced the greatest number of claims relative to May employment (16.3%), followed by the education services (12.2%), accommodation and food services (7.9%), manufacturing (4.8%) and construction (4.8%) sectors.
