In a recent column I wrote about the public charter school initiative filed by several education reform groups here. The column focused primarily on the remarkable success of Louisiana’s Recovery School District, a majority-charter district. The RSD has been responsible for the turnaround of New Orleans schools.

This week the Association of Washington Business endorsed the public charter school initiative, I-1240.

“The charter public schools outlined under Initiative 1240 would give public schools and the families they serve greater flexibility and choice in the education of their students. AWB has long supported charter schools and Initiative 1240 aligns with the principles our board has set forth in our policy principles,” added Brunell. “Charter public schools are one more tool educators can use to help ensure all students reach their potential.”

Stateline has a good roundup of how states are moving forward with charter schools.

And the legislator who successfully championed the first “chartered school” legislation in Minnesota twenty years ago reflects on the legislative history and the movement it spawned. Read the whole thing.
